Construction Marketplace Directory

Construction MarketplaceOne component of the bid placed by a construction contractor is the cost of supplies required to complete the project.

Manufacturers, suppliers and retailers who offer construction materials, building components and supplies are an integral part of the construction industry. The construction marketplace may include building materials such as lumber, framing hardware, drywall and other building products, flooring materials of various types, surface coatings and paint, as well as architectural metal products like metal roofing or siding.

Other necessary supplies may include plumbing fixtures and appliances, heating and air conditioning systems, soundproofing materials, and brick, tile, marble and stone products. Eco-friendly or green building goods may also be required, generally at a higher cost. In the case of renovations or repair work, replacement materials may be needed.

The cost of doors and windows will be figured into the cost of the project, and some projects will include sunrooms and pool enclosures, pool equipment and supplies. Pre-made or custom log and timber homes may be requested, or metal buildings, portable buildings, or manufactured homes.

Professional contractors will have suppliers who they regularly use, but other items may be purchased from home improvement stores, hardware stores, or home and garden centers.

A general contractor is responsible for providing everything that may be needed to complete a project, although the general contractor may hire subcontractors to perform portions of the construction work. In such cases, although the general contractor is ultimately responsible for ensuring that necessary supplies and equipment are available, securing these supplies may be left to subcontractors as a requisite of their contract.

The process of estimating is a construction specialty in itself. The materials portion of the estimate is based on a definite quantity of material or items and the best cost available to purchase them. For example, brick is usually priced by thousands of units required based on the number of units required per square foot of wall area, plus the added costs of special brick shapes
